Prime Minister to Visit Middle East to Boost Closer Cooperation

(11/05/2012)

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will pay her first visit to Qatar and Bahrain so as to strengthen relationships and cooperation between Thailand and the two Gulf countries.

The official visit to the Middle East is scheduled for 13-16 May 2012. Issues on trade and medical services will be the key topics in the agenda of her talks with leaders of the two nations.

Prime Minister Yingluck will start her trip with Bahrain between 13 and 15 May. Bahrain is a good friend of Thailand and this year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of Thai and Bahraini diplomatic relations.

During this visit, the Prime Minister will pay a courtesy call on the King of Bahrain, His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, and the Crown Prince, His Royal Higness Shaikh Salman Bin Isa Al-Khalifa, before a meeting with Bahraini Prime Minister Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa.

The visit is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, from national security to investment, agriculture, education, and health services, particularly medical tourism. Prime Minister Yingluck will also urge Thai private companies to take part in construction projects in Bahrain. She will sign a Memorandum of Understanding in tourism and culture with her Bahraini counterpart, Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa.

As for Qatar, the trip will take place on 15-16 May, when Prime Minister Yingluck will begin her visit with paying a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani – the Emir of Qatar.

She will hold a meeting with her Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabir Al-Thani, to boost cordial relations and foster bilateral cooperation in all fields. In particular, Bahrain will be urged to invest more in Thailand. The meeting is expected to remove trade obstacles between the two countries, as well.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Yingluck will propose closer cooperation with Qatar and Bahrain in the fields of medicine and health care, as Thailand’s health care services are considered well-developed and of a high standard, especially orthopedic surgery.

Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul said after chairing a preparatory meeting of the authorities concerned with the visit that for the first time, representatives from the medical sector will accompany the prime minister's entourage, as the Middle Eastern nations are confident about Thailand's medical services and development, with many of its nationals seeking medical treatment in Thailand.
