More
than 450 government leaders, business executives, scholars, and members
of the media around the world will gather in Thailand for the upcoming
World Economic Forum on East Asia.
The three-day event will take place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok from 30 May to 1 June 2012. As the host country, Thailand believes that the World Economic Forum on East Asia, the 21st of its kind, will help promote investors’ confidence in the Thai economic and political situation. The Thai government has expressed its wish to host this forum since 2009 following the recent global financial crisis and its impacts on the Thai economy. In early 2011, the World Economic Forum selected Thailand to host the World Economic Forum on East Asia for the first time in 2012. The selection reflects trust from the global economic community, particularly in the country’s economic potential and stability in the post recovery period. Before Thailand, Singapore hosted this forum seven times. Malaysia hosted it in 2008, Vietnam in 2010, and Indonesia in 2011. There are currently eight Thai enterprises that are members of the World Economic Forum on East Asia. They are PTT Public Company, Thai Airways International, Thai Beverage Public Company, Bangkok Bank, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Ch. Karnchang, Krung Thai Bank, and Central Pattana Public Company. The theme of the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2012 is “Shaping the Region’s Future through Connectivity.” Major topics to be discussed include Rethinking Regional Models for a New Global Context, Responding to a Region@Risk, and Realizing Regional Connectivity. Discussion will also touch on the issues of how to handle new challenges and natural disasters. On this occasion, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and other dignitaries will share their perspectives on the new challenges and opportunities of shaping East Asia's future through connectivity at the opening ceremony on 31 May. Prime Minister Yingluck will also host the opening reception and gala dinner on the same day in honor of the participants in the forum. She has invited leaders from many countries to attend the 21st World Economic Forum on East Asia. They include nine ASEAN countries and its six dialogue partners, namely China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and India, as well as the prime ministers of Mongolia and Bahrain. The Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, has also invited relevant ministerial representatives and CEOs from the private sectors of various countries across the world. Members of the media interested in participating in or covering the event may register online at www.weforummedia.org by 18 May 2012. |
