Prime
Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has called on all provinces nationwide to
create an atmosphere of reconciliation and harmonization.
The call was made during a meeting of the provincial
management policy committee, chaired by the Prime Minister at Santi
Maitri Building, Government House, on September 5.
Prime Minister Yingluck stressed that officials at both the central
administration and the provincial administration must work more closely
together in an integrated manner and in unity. She would like to see
more public participation in local development, saying that all
provincial governors should serve as coordinators in pooling resources
from all relevant agencies.
The Prime Minister emphasized public participation, so that a vast pool
of experience from all sectors of society would be tapped for the
benefit of the people. She would propose this working guideline as a
policy for various provinces to implement.
Apart from creating the atmosphere of reconciliation and harmonization,
the Prime Minister wanted all provinces to improve services for the
people, step up anti-drug efforts, protect natural resources and the
environment, handle water management on a systematic basis, and enhance
the potential of women and children.
In terms of the economy, she said, all provinces must provide
opportunities for each family to have greater access to financial
resources. They should enhance the potential of various communities, as
well. For instance, the “One Tambon, One Product” program should be
given a major boost in order to generate employment and eradicate
poverty among the people. The provinces sharing a border with
neighboring countries should also promote relations with those nations,
especially in terms of cross-border trade.
Regarding tourism, the Prime Minister said that the Government would
designate the period between 2011 and 2012 the “Miracle Thailand” year.
She would like to see each province promote its strengths, such as
tourist attractions and cultural assets, as a way to encourage more
visitors.
In this regard, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and
Sports, Mr. Chumpol Silapa-archa, said that all provinces needed to
develop their tourism sites, with an emphasis on Thai culture. He
pointed out that the Government was planning to allow tourist visas for
visitors from all Asian countries. It would urge the private sector to
help develop tourism destinations, with promotional privileges offered
by the Office of the Board of Investment. He expects that during the
four-year term of this administration, the Government will earn about
one trillion baht in tourism income and attract 25-26 million tourist
arrivals.
