A
transportation plan has been worked out by the Ministry of Transport to
facilitate safe public travel during the 2012 New Year festive season.
The Cabinet, during its meeting on 13 December 2011,
acknowledged the plan, proposed by the Ministry of Transport, which
believed that more people than last year would use public transport to
return to their hometown for the upcoming New Year celebration.
The Ministry explained that the plan was in response to the Government’s
policy statement presented by the Prime Minister in the National
Assembly on 23 August 2011. According to the policy statement, the
Government will reduce damage and loss from road accidents to the
minimum. It will also promote understanding on traveling and using
transportation safely. At the same time, it will put His Majesty the
King’s principles on solving traffic problems into action and make it a
national priority to implement these principles strictly in all parts of
the country.
The safe transportation plan was also in line with the Moscow
Declaration, issued in November 2009, at the end of the first Global
Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Russia. The declaration calls
for a Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2011-2020, with the goal to
stabilize and then reduce the level of global road deaths by 2020. It
says that road traffic injuries are a major public health problem and a
leading cause of death and injury around the world. Vehicle crashes kill
more than 1.2 million people and injure or disable as many as 50
million a year.
The safe transportation plan will be implemented from 29 December 2011
to 4 January 2012, when a great number of people are on the road. The
Cabinet on December 13 announced that the upcoming official New Year
holiday will run from December 31 to January 3. The four-day holiday
will allow people more time to clean and repair their houses after this
year’s floods. It will also promote tourism and stimulate the domestic
economy.
Apart from providing services and facilities for travelers, the
objectives of the plan are also to prevent and reduce road accidents.
During this period, the State Railway of Thailand, the Bangkok Mass
Transit Authority, and the Transport Company will increase their trips
to accommodate more people. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand
will extend its service time on December 31 and January 1, as well.
Thai Airways International will also offer special flights on the
Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket, and Bangkok-Krabi routes, from
December 30 to January 3.
The Department of Highways and the Department of Rural Roads are
repairing many roads damaged by the flooding to facilitate public
travel. The Marine Department is also increasing the number of officials
and rescue boats ready to help travelers and ensure their safety.
