Ongoing Work on Flood Defenses and Prevention

(18/10/2011)

Shelter areas for flood victims are being managed closely by authorities, such as at the Government complex in Changwattana – which can hold an additional 15,000 persons.

The Flood Relief Operations Center (FROC) advises the public to closely monitor announcements on television and radio. One new directive is that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered authorities to build a new defensive wall along Rangsit-Ongkharak Canal.

According to FROC, authorities have the capability to provide assistance in all forms, and will deliver their best for the benefit of the people. FROC has also requested for 12- inch water pumps for operations. At Navanakorn Industrial Estate, the Army and volunteers operated throughout the night of Octoberr 17 to slow down the flow of water that is headed to Bangkok.

Some factories have their own walls and are safe. The Prime Minister is deeply concerned about the safety of the people in the areas affected; it is with this genuine concern that she has visited the sites personally.

For those who are in need of help, FROC advises them to hang a white cloth or make any noticeable signs in front of their home or workplace, and authorities can identify and provide help.
