Mr.
Thongsing Thammavong, Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic
Republic, and Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the President of
Indonesia, will visit Thailand for the World Economic Forum on East Asia
in Bangkok. The two leaders are among more than 450 government leaders,
business executives, scholars, and members of the media around the
world who will gather in the Kingdom for the meeting.
The World Economic Forum on East Asia will take place at
the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok from 30 May to 1 June 2012, with the
theme “Shaping the Region’s Future through Connectivity.” As the host
country, Thailand believes that the forum, the 21st of its kind, will
help promote investors’ confidence in the Thai economic and political
situation.
Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong will arrive in Thailand on May 31
and depart on June 3. It will be his first official visit to Thailand
after assuming the office. During the four-day visit, the Lao leader
will have an audience with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and take a
study tour to the Royal Chitralada Project.
President H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono , meanwhile, will meet Prime
Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to discuss bilateral cooperation,
particularly on fishery, halal food, tourism, energy, as well as
preparations for the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015.
On this occasion, the two leaders will witness the signing of two
memorandums of understanding, one on fishery cooperation and the other
on visa exemption for government officials of both countries.
In related development, Mr. Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Finance said in a joint press conference with Mr.
Sushant Rao, Head of Asia of the World Economic Forum, that Thailand is
honored to host the 21st World Economic Forum on East Asia and the Thai
government has attached great importance to ensuring the success of this
event.
He said that on May 30, as a prelude to the meeting, private sessions
will be organized on five key potential sectors, namely tourism,
agriculture, ICT, food security, energy, and health. On this occasion,
Prime Minister Yingluck and other dignitaries will share their
perspectives on the new challenges and opportunities of shaping East
Asia's future through connectivity at the opening ceremony on May 31.
Prime Minister Yingluck will also host the opening reception and gala
dinner on the same day in honor of the participants in the forum.
