Launching of Cultural Cyber Mall to Offer Thailand’s Cultural Products Online

(13/11/2012)

Online shoppers seeking out cultural products from Thailand can log on to a new website, www.culturalmall.in.th, and purchase Thai cultural goods. At the initial stage, the project focuses on products from the southern border provinces.

The Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with Krung Thai Bank, Thailand Post Company, and Prince of Songkhla University, a university in southern Thailand, as well as the College of Arts, Media, and Technology, Chiang Mai University, have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the Cultural Cyber Mall website.

The Permanent Secretary for Culture, Mr. Somchai Seanglai, revealed that the Ministry has been assigned to serve as the core agency in implementing this project, which provides a new distribution channel through which local people can present their products via the convenient e-commerce website.

Cultural products from the three southern border provinces of Thailand – Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala – have been put on the website under the pilot project before those from other parts of the country are offered online in the near future.

Mr. Somchai said that the Government aims to improve the living conditions of southern residents by promoting their cultural products, which have had limited distribution channels because of the violence in the deep South.

The website, in its pilot version, presents cultural products from the three southern border provinces in 3D animation. This technology is used to demonstrate the product’s features from every angle, making the products more attractive, like a real shopping experience.

Customers can find more than 300 items online, separated into seven groups: art and cultural products, home furnishings, food and beverages, agricultural products and medicine, jewelry, garments, and other commodities.

Under the MOU, the Ministry and its partners will exchange information and connect the operating system of each organization to enhance the high quality of online shopping.

The Yala Municipality, which works closely with local communities, has been successful in convincing local residents to join this project. Prince of Songkhla University will support research and development on products. The College of Arts, Media, and Technology, will develop the presentation of the products in 3D. Krung Thai Bank will provide convenient payment methods for customers, and Thailand Post will be responsible for shipping all orders to clients.

The new project has been cited as cooperative efforts by various agencies to help improve the southern situation through the use of cultural capital to create economic value.

According to the website’s visitor data, the site is gaining popularity among customers: the number of visitors is more than 7,000. At the end of 2012, the website will launch its New Year gift basket campaign, which will be available between November 2012 and January 2013.
