Youth Idols from Southern Thailand Project

(27/08/2012)

The Government Public Relations Department of Thailand (PRD) has launched the project “Youth Idols from Southern Thailand” to present a group of young people from southern Thailand who are regarded as youth idols for other children.

The project is intended to show to the international community efforts to resolve southern problems on a sustainable basis, with a focus on the younger generation.

“Youth idols” are defined as those who are successful in their work and lead their lives fruitfully without getting involved with narcotic drugs. They have also learned to put their religious principles into practice and live in harmony with their friends of different faiths. By so doing, they will contribute to the resolving of problems in the southern border provinces of Thailand and development of the deep South, thus bringing about lasting peace for the happiness of local residents.

Under the project, PRD has joined the Yala Municipality Youth Orchestra in the southern border province of Yala in bringing a number of youths from this orchestra to Malaysia. The youths are scheduled to perform with their counterparts in Penang in a joint orchestra concert on 29 August 2012. Members of the Yala Municipality Youth Orchestra are regarded as youth idols from southern Thailand.

Taking into account that Malaysia is a close neighbor and shares many similarities with the local residents in southern Thailand, the joint youth orchestra concert will provide an opportunity for young people of both countries to get to know more about each other, develop good relationships, and help each other, not only as close neighbors but also as members of ASEAN.

As a major media organization of the Thai government, PRD has used its communication networks to create better understanding about the Government’s policies and operations. It considers the project one way to create better understanding about the southern situation of Thailand through people-to-people contact and the use of music as a medium. With better understanding, the handling of the southern situation will improve.

The Thai government is making efforts in every way possible to restore peace in the southern border provinces and improve the living conditions of local residents. The Youth Idols from Southern Thailand project aims to improve the southern situation through the cultural dimension, as PRD believes that better understanding among local youths today will contribute to lasting peace and harmonization in the long run.

The Government is proceeding with its plan to create lasting peace in the southern border provinces, particularly in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. Eight years ago, in January 2004, violent incidents erupted in the three provinces, and the conflicts have dragged on to this day.

Apart from adopting the “politics leads the military” approach in peace-building operations in the South, the Government has also focused on a development-led approach in eradicating poverty and drug problems, improving education, and providing greater opportunities for local people. It considers the resolving of the southern situation one of the country’s national priorities, as well.
