The
Government has launched the project “The Mother of the Land Fund
Village in Celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th Birthday” in an
effort to fight narcotic drugs.
The project was launched on 8 June 2012 by Prime Minister
Yingluck Shinawatra, who also presided over the opening of a workshop to
step up anti-drug operations in the next four months.
The objective was to provide villages and communities nationwide with
funds under the Mother of the Land Fund Village Project, which would
empower them to ease the drug situation. The launching of the project
was also meant to commemorate the 80th birthday anniversary of Her
Majesty the Queen on 12 August 2012.
It will also allow people from all walks of life to show gratitude to
Her Majesty the Queen, who is recognized as the Mother of the Land.
Concerned about the drug problem, Her Majesty has donated her personal
funds to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board to support the
operations of anti-drug volunteers.
Prime Minister Yingluck said that the Government is ready to support the
Mother of the Land Fund Village Project, so that it would spread all
over the country, thus bringing the drug problem under control.
She emphasized drug prevention and control in accordance with the
national anti-drug strategy, known as the “Force of the Land to Defeat
the Drug Problem.” The strategy is part of the Government’s anti-drug
drive, which kicked off in September 2011, as part of the national
agenda.
The drug problem has also been raised as a regional issue to be tackled
jointly by ASEAN members, which are moving toward a drug-free ASEAN by
2015. Prime Minister Yingluck stressed the need to continue proactive
anti-drug operations. In particular, drug addicts are regarded as
patients and will be encouraged to receive treatment and rehabilitation
on a voluntary basis. This would reduce drug demand in the country.
At the same time, serious action will be taken against drug producers
and dealers. Emphasis would be placed on anti-drug campaigns in villages
and communities, while vulnerable groups, especially young people,
would be prevented from getting involved with narcotics.
She believed that the serious anti-drug campaign in the next four
months, from June to September 2012, would lead to a success in dealing
with the drug situation. The Prime Minister called on all sectors of
Thai society, including civil society, educational institutions, and
religious groups, to work in an integrated manner to fight the drug
menace.
The Government has set a target to bring 400,000 drug addicts to receive
rehabilitation by 2012. About 280,000 have so far joined the
rehabilitation program.
