 The
Yala Municipality Youth Orchestra from southern Thailand will join the
Penang Philharmonic Orchestra in the Thai-Malaysian Joint Youth
Orchestra concert, to be held in Dewan Sri Pinang Auditorium, George
Town, in Penang, on 29 August 2012. The event will be organized by the Government Public Relations Department of Thailand (PRD) and the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang. It is part of the Youth Idols from Southern Thailand project and the celebrations of the 80th birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand this year. A total of 60 Thai youths, who are members of the Yala Municipality Youth Orchestra, will take part in this joint performance. They come from the three southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, which make up a multi-cultural society. Although the three provinces are predominantly Muslim, members of the Yala Municipality Youth Orchestra consist of different faiths: Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians. They range from primary to secondary school age and are regarded as youth idols, who have spent time fruitfully together. Living under the dark shadow of violence in the southern border provinces, they use music as a medium to create better understanding for peace and happiness in their community. The moral value of playing music together also prevents them from being misled and spending time in unproductive ways. A number of youth there have been affected by the southern situation, and the sound of music also helps heal the wounds in their hearts. Many of them have lost family members and friends to violence in the southern border provinces. The Thai government has placed the utmost importance on the tackling of problems in the southern border provinces. The project “Youth Idols from Southern Thailand,” launched by PRD, is a way to ease the southern conflict through the cultural dimension. Malaysia has supported the Thai government in resolving the situation in the southern border provinces. The Thai-Malaysian Joint Youth Orchestra concert will, therefore, contribute to solutions to the issue and promote relations between the two neighboring countries. Since the year 2012 marks the 80th birthday anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand, the youth orchestra will join the celebrations on this auspicious occasion. Apart from the Thai and Malaysian students in the orchestra, joining the Thai-Malaysian Joint Youth Orchestra concert will be famous singers from both Thailand and Malaysia. Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, and Western songs will be performed, together with Thai cultural shows, at the two-hour musical performance. Prior to the concert, a press conference will take place at the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang on August 28, at 3.30 p.m. |
