Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is on an official visit to the Federal
Republic of Germany and the French Republic between 17 and 21 July 2012,
as guest of Dr. Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor of Germany, and
French President François Hollande.It is the first official visit to Europe by Prime Minister Yingluck after assuming office in August 2011. The visit to Germany is the first by a Thai Prime Minister in 17 years and, and that to France is the first in seven years. During her visit to Germany on 17-19 July, the Prime Minister will reassure all stakeholders in Germany of Thailand’s political stability and economic dynamism, as well as its readiness to assume an active role in international affairs. She will also highlight the economic potential of Thailand as gateway to ASEAN and discuss a plan to establish a strategic partnership with Germany in the area of green economy. Both countries are expected to deepen cooperation in vocational education and other areas, ranging from disaster management to trilateral development. In addition, Prime Minister Yingluck will give a keynote address at a reception to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Germany, and will meet the Thai community there. Apart from Berlin, the Prime Minister will also visit the state of Brandenburg, to observe Feldheim, an example of villages that are designed to be self-sufficient in terms of renewable energy, and the Brandenburg Regional Competence Center, one of Germany’s leading centers in dual education system, with an aim to emulate the success of Germany in skilled labor development. The objective is to better prepare the Thai workforce for the ASEAN Community in 2015. While in France from 19 to 21 July, the Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President François Hollande, who plays a crucial role in solving the current economic crisis in Europe, and will have discussion and a working lunch with Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault, the French Prime Minister. She will witness the signing of the “Intergovernment Agreement for Cooperation in Education and Research between the Government of Thailand and the Government of the French Republic,” which will further strengthen Thai-French cooperation in this field. In addition, Prime Minister Yingluck will also visit the Pavillon d’Arsenal to observe the exhibition “Paris, Metropolis 2020," which will provide an overview of the development of urban areas of Paris. Representatives from the Federation of Thai Industries, the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Thai Bankers’ Association and various business sectors are accompanying the Prime Minister on this European trip. |
